What fees does Etsy charge?

A US shop pays up to five kinds of fee on each sale. Three apply to every order:

FeeRateCharged on
Listing fee$0.20Each item sold, and each 4-month renewal
Transaction fee6.5%Item price plus shipping
Payment processing3% + $0.25Everything the buyer pays, sales tax included
Offsite Ads15% or 12%, up to $100Only sales from Etsy's ads on other sites
Currency conversion2.5%Only if you list in a different currency from your bank

Shipping isn't a way round the fees: Etsy charges its transaction fee on what you charge for postage too.

The formula in plain English

Worked example: a $25 item with $5 shipping

  1. Sale total: $25 + $5 = $30
  2. Transaction fee: 6.5% × $30 = $1.95
  3. Payment processing: 3% × $30 + $0.25 = $1.15
  4. Listing fee: $0.20
  5. Total fees: $3.30, or 11% of the sale; you receive $26.70
  6. Minus $8 to make it and $5 postage: $13.70 profit, a 45.7% margin

If the same buyer came through an Offsite Ad, Etsy takes another 15% ($4.50) and the profit drops to $9.20. That's why it's worth pricing with some room for ad fees.

How to price to cover Etsy fees

Work backwards from the profit you want. Fees are a percentage of the price, so adding $1 to your price adds about 9.5 cents in fees. For $10 profit on the item above, charge $20.91 plus $5 shipping; the calculator solves this for you, Offsite Ads cap included. Our candle, 3D print and resin calculators work out your cost to make first.

FAQs

How much does Etsy take from a $25 sale?

With $5 shipping, $3.30 in fees: 11% of the $30 total. On a sale through Offsite Ads, $7.80.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% payment fee both apply to shipping. Free shipping with the cost built into the price comes out the same.

Does Etsy charge fees on sales tax?

Only the payment processing fee. Etsy collects and pays sales tax for you, but charges its 3% on the whole amount the buyer pays. Enter your typical sales tax rate to include it.

Can I turn off Offsite Ads?

Only while your shop has made less than $10,000 in the past 12 months. After that, Offsite Ads are compulsory at 12%, still capped at $100 per order.

When is the $0.20 listing fee charged?

When you publish a listing, again every 4 months if it hasn't sold, and for each extra item sold from a multi-quantity listing.

Are Etsy Ads included?

No. Etsy Ads on Etsy itself are a daily budget you choose, separate from these per-sale fees. Add your average ad spend per sale to the cost to make if you use them.
